Code of Conduct
for the Hobby Distillers Association
Our Mission
The Hobby Distillers Association (“HDA”) exists to support, educate, and unite hobby distillers and home fermentation enthusiasts through responsible education, advocacy, community, and shared knowledge.
We are committed to fostering a welcoming, respectful, and professional environment for all members, volunteers, partners, sponsors, vendors, moderators, and participants in HDA events, online communities, and activities.
Participation in the HDA community constitutes agreement to abide by this Code of Conduct.
1. Respect for Others
All members and participants are expected to treat others with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.
Members may not engage in:
- Harassment or intimidation
- Personal attacks or insults
- Hate speech or discriminatory behavior
- Threats of violence or illegal conduct
- Bullying, stalking, or targeted harassment
- Excessive profanity directed at individuals
- Disruptive trolling or intentionally inflammatory behavior
Healthy debate and differing opinions are welcome. Personal hostility is not.
2. Inclusive Community
The HDA welcomes individuals from all backgrounds and experience levels.
Discrimination or harassment based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, age, gender, sexual orientation, veteran status, or political affiliation will not be tolerated.
We encourage an environment where beginners feel comfortable asking questions and experienced members feel encouraged to share knowledge responsibly.
3. Responsible Discussion of Distillation
The HDA promotes education, safety, craftsmanship, and responsible hobby participation.
Members agree to:
- Follow all applicable laws and regulations in their jurisdiction
- Prioritize safety in all distillation and fermentation activities
- Avoid encouraging dangerous practices
- Avoid providing instructions intended to circumvent laws or regulations
- Promote responsible alcohol handling and consumption
The HDA does not encourage unlawful activity and reserves the right to remove content that promotes illegal, unsafe, or reckless conduct.
4. Educational Integrity
Members are encouraged to share experiences, techniques, recipes, and opinions in good faith.
However:
- Deliberate misinformation is prohibited
- Fraudulent claims or deceptive business practices are prohibited
- Unsafe technical advice may be removed
- Spam, excessive self-promotion, and affiliate abuse are prohibited
Commercial members and vendors must clearly identify promotional content where appropriate.
5. Online Communities & Events
This Code of Conduct applies to:
- HDA websites
- Forums and message boards
- Social media groups and pages
- Virtual events and webinars
- In-person events, conferences, and meetups
- Video comments and livestream chats
- Member communications conducted through official HDA channels
Members are expected to behave professionally both publicly and privately when representing the HDA community.
6. Intellectual Property & Content
Members should respect the intellectual property rights of others.
Do not:
- Upload copyrighted content without permission
- Share pirated books, videos, courses, or software
- Misrepresent another person’s work as your own
By posting content within HDA communities, members grant the HDA a non-exclusive right to display and distribute that content within HDA-operated platforms and promotional materials unless otherwise agreed.
7. Vendor & Sponsor Conduct
Vendors, sponsors, and commercial participants are expected to:
- Conduct business honestly and professionally
- Deliver products and services as represented
- Avoid deceptive marketing practices
- Respect customer privacy
- Communicate professionally with members
The HDA reserves the right to suspend or remove vendors whose conduct harms members or the reputation of the organization.
8. Enforcement
The HDA reserves the right to investigate and respond to violations of this Code of Conduct.
Possible actions may include:
- Informal warning
- Content removal
- Temporary suspension
- Removal from events or online communities
- Membership termination
- Vendor or sponsorship termination
Serious violations may be referred to appropriate authorities when necessary.
Enforcement decisions are made at the sole discretion of HDA leadership.
9. Reporting Concerns
Members who experience or witness violations of this Code of Conduct are encouraged to report concerns to HDA leadership or moderators.
Reports should include:
- Description of the incident
- Date/time (if applicable)
- Relevant screenshots, links, or evidence
- Names of involved parties (if known)
Reports will be handled as confidentially as reasonably possible.
10. Commitment to Community
The HDA exists because of the passion, knowledge, and integrity of its members.
By participating in the community, members help create an environment focused on:
