Can Moonshine Really Make You Go Blind?

One of the oldest warnings about homemade whiskey is also one of the most misunderstood:

“Drink moonshine and you’ll go blind.”

You’ve probably heard it from a family member, in a movie, or as a general warning about homemade spirits. But is there any truth to it?

The answer isn’t as simple as yes or no—but not for the reason most people think.

Where the Myth Came From

During Prohibition, the government required that all beverage alcohol was denatured using a variety of toxic chemicals, including methanol, making it unsafe to drink. Some illegal alcohol producers used this industrial alcohol to product illicit liquor. Others produced spirits under unsanitary conditions or intentionally added harmful substances to increase profits. In some tragic cases, people suffered blindness or even died after drinking these contaminated products.

Over time, those incidents evolved into the blanket belief that all homemade “moonshine” was dangerous.

What Is Methanol?

Methanol is a naturally occurring alcohol produced during fermentation. Unlike ethanol—the alcohol found in beer, wine, and whiskey—methanol is toxic in sufficient quantities.

One common misconception is that distillation creates methanol. It doesn’t. Methanol is produced during fermentation, and distillation simply separates the compounds already present in the fermented wash.  The thing to remember here is that distillation does not produce anything that was not already there.

Another common belief is that discarding the foreshots removes all of the methanol. While the foreshots do contain some methanol along with other volatile compounds, methanol is spread throughout the distillation and cannot simply be eliminated by throwing away the first portion of the run.

So, Can Properly Made Moonshine Make You Blind?

When spirits are produced from food-grade ingredients using proper fermentation and sound distillation practices, methanol levels are generally comparable to those found in commercially produced spirits.  This means that properly made home distilled spirits contain comparable methanol levels their commercial counterparts.

The real danger comes from contaminated alcohol, industrial chemicals, or improperly produced products—not from the simple fact that a spirit was distilled at home.

That’s an important distinction and one that is often lost when this topic is discussed.

The Bottom Line

The saying that “moonshine will make you go blind” is based on real historical tragedies, but it has become an oversimplified myth, and does not tell the entire story.

Responsible hobby distilling is built on understanding the science, using quality ingredients, and following proper techniques—not on folklore and misinformation.  This is one of the reasons the Hobby Distillers Association operates- to help educate hobby distillers on safe, responsible distilling practices.
